Making the Case

When nonprofits focus on continuous improvement, they are more likely to provide effective and efficient services.

Nonprofit organizations form out of the desire to tackle social issues and bring positive changes to people and/or communities. Only rarely, however, do organizations turn their attention from addressing urgent community needs, to assessing their own organization’s strengths and weaknesses in meeting those needs. Consequently, many organizations operate at peak effort but less than optimal reach, “dosage”, or efficiency. The same factors that hinder these internal assessments often keep organizations from a clear-eyed appraisal of their external environment. Services or infrastructure which unnecessarily duplicate other community offerings – or assume a perpetual status quo – can threaten an organization’s ability to sustain operations over time and to achieve their change goals. So that our communities will benefit from their good works in the long-term, nonprofits will benefit from having a full range of assessment tools and technical assistance needed for optimal functioning.

Our Investment

Success in enhancing the profile of nonprofit effectiveness will be reflected in this community change:

  • More nonprofits serving the community with increased effectiveness, i.e., serving more clients, increasing the impact of service, and serving with a more efficient use of resources

In order to help support those changes, the Foundation will engage in one key strategy:

  • Organizational Learning - Equipping organizations to identify and act on their most pressing internal and external issues, informed by best practice assessments
